This is a preliminary report on 2005 and 2004 in Burgundy. 2005 is being praised to the skies, attracting labels such as the vintage of the century (the fact that there is a long way to go this century seems to be irrelevant).
2004, poor thing, is being cast as the 'plain sister', whose presence is just about tolerated

One of the nicest problems to have when you have an extensive cellar is that you are almost certain to have wines you have forgotten about. There is then the risk that you may not remember or come across those bottles until they have 'died' - this happens to all collections, big or small.

During a recent trip to the French wine regions of Champagne and Burgundy, I was struck by how winemakers continually talked about striving for finesse, balance and delicacy in their wines.
Contrast that with my sojourn earlier this month in the Napa Valley, where winemakers were more likely to talk about power, concentration and richness.

If you read about Burgundy even a little, you are sure to hear about it being the most exciting, most romantic and sexiest of all wines. You will also hear that the pinot noir, the grape of red Burgundy, is fickle and finicky and is very difficult to coax great wine out of year after year.
Real Burgundy is not a color, but a wine that comes from France, is made of pinot noir, and will say Bourgogne on the label. It is not made by Carlo Rossi and you can’t get it for five bucks a bottle.

As the result of gravel extraction by Pioneer Aggregates, the site of the first proven Roman vineyard in Britain has been discovered at Wollaston near Northampton. Situated in the Nene Valley, the site of over 10 hectares (25 acres) has been confirmed by the identification of vitis pollen from the now decayed Roman vines. Its dating has been estimated as 2nd - 3rd century A.D.

Bouilland, France "Must keep the liver in good shape," Robert Lyster declared on the first day of Burgundy boot camp in the medieval French hamlet of Bouilland.
Rooting through his satchel, the 62- year-old co-founder of Lyster Watson Management, a hedge fund in New York, grinned at the nine other jet- lagged wine investors.

Reporting on a great vintage is a piece of cake. The vintage speaks for itself, and the press have already preempted what you want to say. All one needs to add are some tasting notes and appropriate echoing comments.
Reporting on a vintage about which both lay and wine press have been disparaging is considerably more difficult.

Should you dive in to the pricey but high-profile 2005 wines from Bordeaux?
Depends on your tastes and your wallet.
French winemakers, like French fashion designers, try to make news every year. But the 2005 vintage in Bordeaux is generating the kind of press last seen when Christian Dior's "New Look" dropped hemlines nearly to the floor more than a half century ago.

The fame of Chateau Pichon-Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande, can be attributed without any doubt to one person, Madame May-Eliane de Lencquesaing.
The history of Pichon Lalande or Pichon, as it is affectionately called, goes back a long way, more than four centuries to be precise, but as I pointed out in an earlier essay, the significant milestone in the history of this great Chateau was the day in 1978 when May-Eliane took personal charge of it.
