The new Parisian shop Lavinia, which bills itself as Europe's largest wine and spirits shop, devotes a generous section to French organic wines. But they cannot be found among the hundreds of bottles laid out appealingly in stylish wood and glass racks. The enviable selection is tucked away at the back of the shop, in the basement.

During the second week of January, 2003, I attended a series of tastings of the wines of Alsace. In addition to extensive tastings of the wines of Hugel, Marcel Deiss, Trimbach and Zind-Humbrecht, we also sampled several offerings from Dopff au Moulin, Pierre Sparr, Schlumberger, Leon Beyer and Theobald Schoffit.

There are few Sunday drives more charming than the one that takes you on the small roads that weave through the vineyards of Alsace. The route is a pleasant one, and one weaves their way past ruined fortresses while making their way through romantic towns that retain much of their medieval charm. Alsatians treasure their wines and their vineyards are spread along the entire length of the eternally green Vosges Mountains and along the hills lining the Rhine.

Three years ago, when the Golan Heights Winery of Israel released its first Gewurztraminer wine, very few people here had any idea that there was even a Gewurztraminer grape, yet alone how to pronounce it's name. In parts of Alsace, where the grape has been successfully grown for at least four hundred years, many people do not know that there is any other grape.

You've probably heard the saying that if you don't like Chardonnay, it's because you haven't found the right one. Tongue and cheek sentiment aside, it bears witness to the great variety of different wines that all masquerade under the single title of Chardonnay, some so disparate as to hardly be recognizable as coming from the same grape.

Whether it's large and round with a wide opening, or tall, narrow and tulip-shaped, a wine glass is a vessel built to enhance wine appreciation. Of course, the basic purpose of the glass is to hold liquid, so almost anything will do in a pinch. At European bistros, you might even get your house wine in what looks like a jelly jar. This is rustic and comfortable, and for many wines this will do just fine.
